I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I have been gone from this space for a little over two weeks.

I went to the ER for what I thought was a lung ailment. I was short of breath, had an unproductive cough, and couldn't sleep for feeling as if I were drowning.

Turns out, I have congestive heart failure. I might have less than five years to live. I am only 39. I have an eleven year old son. Pray for me, please, or send me good vibes, or whatever. I am following the doctor's orders, but this is a scary place to be right now.

Letter to the Editor: Demifiction

This letter appeared in the New Orleans Clarion-Picayune, a few days after the incident in ysabetwordsmith's poem "Berettaflies". It is also a response to dialecticdreamer's demifiction: Lab Cooperating With Police Investigation.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am wondering what exactly is being done to find and punish the perpetrator of the incident with the so-called "berettaflies"? I see a lot of smoke being blown about who's not responsible, and who is helping whom, which is important, but a significant percentage of your readers want to know who is responsible, and what is being done to find and punish the miscreant(s).

I have one thing to say to the person or persons responsible for this mess: "Bless your hearts!"

For those of you not in the know, 'bless your/his/her/their heart(s)' is NOT a blessing, or a positive message. It is, in fact, a polite, genteel, Southern way of saying: 'fuck you and the horse you rode in on'.

That is, in Southern Louisiana and Texas. It can be used as a blessing, but context and tone of voice is important. It is also a way of saying you hope that they become better people, implying both that they need to do so, and that it would take a miracle for that to happen.

I have recently been listening to these two a cappella groups. If you don't know what a cappella means, it's music without instruments. Purely human voices.

Thinking about Easy City 2: The Environment

All I can say about the environment around New Orleans, is that it won't be easy to fix, at least not now. If something were put into place to deal with the river a long time ago, so that people were used to it, it would make a lot of this easier.

One thing that needs to happen is the river needs to change its bed. Right now, it would be a logistical nightmare. The main problem, is, of course, the people. They don't want to deal with it. If the buildings had been built correctly, from the start, so that flooding wouldn't cause the property damage it causes now, it wouldn't be a problem.

What you’re fighting against, mostly, is people’s attitudes. Northshore people think that the Northshore is rural and friendly and small town in a good way. New Orleans is the city, and it’s loud, and industrial and bad traffic. People from south of the lake pretty much just think that the Northshore is full of hicks. These attitudes are, in fact, changing, but it’s taking a very long time. There are still people alive today who remember when there was no bridge across the lake. The first bridge across the lake was built in 1959. I know that that sounds like a long enough time to get past it, but if you grow up with your parents and grandparents having a certain attitude, it makes it hard to form a different opinion.

Truthfully, though, it's actually going to be harder to get the people south of the lake to join each other, than to get Northshore people willing to join with New Orleans, or for New Orleanians to be willing to join the Northshore. South of the lake you've got New Orleans proper, Metarie, Kenner, Venetian Isles, and that's just on the East Bank. On the West Bank there's Westwego, Algiers, and Gretna. And that's not even taking into account St. Bernard Parish and Plaquemines Parish. And then there's things west of the lake, which I'm not sure if you thought of including.

It might help if you could give me a precise area that you're thinking of. I'm looking at a map, and there's about twenty to twenty-five parishes in the area I think you're thinking of.
